Businesses have always adapted to the software available to them. We wanted to know what happens when that reverses, when the software starts adapting to the business instead.

This report looks at a sample of 50K+ live, deployed apps built by businesses on Emergent. Not abandoned prototypes or half-finished experiments. Apps that are running right now, across 28+ industries, with 8M+ traffic on the sampled set alone.

Almost none were built by a development team.

Why we studied deployed apps

We focused on deployed apps because a live product is evidence. It tells us a business trusted what it built enough to run on it.

We also spoke to 300 of the operators behind these apps. They span industries, business models, and geographies. But their stories almost always began the same way: something in the business had quietly stopped working.

Every workaround came at a cost

Only one in seven of the 300 operators we interviewed was genuinely well served by software already on the market.

Everyone else had to adapt. They accepted manual work, compromised on software that only half-fit, or paid for custom development. None of those choices solved the underlying problem. The businesses kept running, but on effort and expense that grew with every new customer, every new hire, every new order.

A real fix meant building custom software, and for most operators, that door was closed. Development quotes were out of reach, timelines stretched months to over a year, and the operators themselves had never written a line of code. So the choice came down to build or live without. Most lived without.

What changed

The people behind these systems are not agencies or freelance developers. They are the operators themselves: founders, clinic managers, shop owners, fleet supervisors. People who had no coding background and no developer to hire, but who knew exactly what their business needed because they run it every day.

What they built spans the full width of a business. Customer-facing storefronts and booking pages on one side. CRM, inventory management, client portals, and internal tools on the other. Operational software that no vendor ships in the exact shape a specific business requires.

Healthcare, retail, construction, hospitality, agriculture, real estate, finance, professional services, and more. Twenty-eight industries and counting. The problem these operators were solving was not industry-specific. It was structural.

What this data tells us

For one in three operators, the software replaced nothing. Not because they were satisfied with what they had. Because nothing had been possible before. The software they needed did not exist at any price they could pay. It exists now only because they built it themselves.

None of the software running these 50,000+ apps was commissioned, purchased, or outsourced. Operators built it themselves, in the shape their business actually works. Most had never built software before. And now that software takes bookings, moves inventory, collects rent, and sends receipts, every day, for businesses that stopped waiting for someone else to build it.
