Bearer Token

A bearer token is an access credential that lets whoever presents it call a protected API or service. It is usually sent in an HTTP Authorization header as "Bearer <token>". Because possession is enough to use it, it must be protected like a password and sent only over HTTPS.

What Is a Bearer Token?

A bearer token is an access credential that lets whoever presents it call a protected API or service. It is commonly an access token, but “bearer” describes how it is used: possession grants access.

How Bearer Token Authentication Works

The server issues and checks the credential.

  1. A user or app authenticates with an authorization server.
  2. The server returns a token with allowed permissions.
  3. The app sends it with an API request.
  4. The API validates it, then allows or rejects the request.

Bearer Token Authorization Header Format

The standard format defined by RFC 6750 is Authorization: Bearer <token>. Do not put tokens in URLs, which may be logged, shared, or bookmarked.

Bearer Token vs JWT vs API Key

CredentialWhat it describes
Bearer tokenA credential accepted from its holder.
JWTA structured token format, which can be used as a bearer token.
API keyAn app identifier that may act as a bearer credential if the API accepts it that way.

Benefits of Bearer Tokens

Well-designed authorization systems can limit access precisely.

  • Support delegated access and narrow permission scopes.
  • Can expire, rotate, or be revoked by the issuing system.

Practical Limits and Security Risks

A stolen bearer token can usually be replayed until it expires or is revoked.

  • Logs, source control, browser storage, and query strings can expose tokens.
  • A token alone does not prove its original user is currently present.

Safe Bearer Token Practices

Treat a token like a password.

  • Use HTTPS, short lifetimes, least-privilege scopes, and secure storage.
  • Redact tokens from logs and use refresh tokens only when needed.

How does bearer token authentication work?

An app receives a token after authentication or authorization, sends it in the Authorization header, and the API validates it before returning protected data.

What is the difference between JWT and bearer token?

JWT is a token format. Bearer token describes a usage model where anyone holding the token can present it. A JWT can be used as a bearer token.

Is an API key a bearer token?

It can be, if an API grants access solely because the caller presents that key. API keys and bearer access tokens often have different issuance, scope, and rotation controls.

How do you get a bearer token?

An authorization server or API issues one after verifying a user, application, or approved authorization request. Follow the provider’s documented OAuth or authentication flow.

Does a bearer token expire?

Many access tokens expire, but expiry is set by the issuing system. Check the API documentation and handle renewal or reauthentication safely.
