Feature Attribution

Feature attribution is an explainable AI technique that assigns contribution scores to input features so people can see why a machine learning model made a prediction. It can explain one result or summarize patterns across many results. These scores describe model behavior, not proof that a feature caused the outcome.

What Is Feature Attribution?

Feature attribution is an explainable AI technique that assigns contribution scores to model inputs, called features, to show why a machine learning model made a prediction. It makes a model more interpretable by estimating which inputs pushed an outcome higher or lower. A feature is a usable input, such as transaction amount or device type. An attribute can describe a property too, but in machine learning, feature is the more precise term. Attribution describes model behavior, not proof that an input caused the outcome.

How Feature Attribution Works

An explanation starts with a trained model and a specific prediction. For example, a fraud-detection system may flag a card transaction.

  1. Select the prediction or set of predictions to explain.
  2. Choose a baseline, such as an average transaction or a neutral input.
  3. Calculate how each feature changes the prediction relative to that baseline.
  4. Label positive contributions that increase fraud risk and negative contributions that reduce it.
  5. Review the result alongside the input data, model version, and testing context.

Local vs. Global Feature Attribution

Local and global explanations answer different questions. They should not be used interchangeably.

TypePurposeExampleKey caution
LocalExplain one predictionA new device and unusual location raised risk for one transaction. It does not describe every prediction.
GlobalSummarize model patternsTransaction amount is influential across a validation dataset.A broad pattern may not explain one case.

Common Feature Attribution Methods

Methods differ in what they approximate, how quickly they run, and which models they can inspect.

MethodBest fitHow it explainsCaution
SHAPMany model typesAllocates contributions across features. Can be computationally expensive.
LIMEIndividual predictionsFits a simple local approximation. Results can vary with sampling choices.
Permutation importanceGlobal analysisMeasures performance loss after shuffling a feature.Correlated features can mislead results.
Integrated gradientsNeural networksAccumulates changes from a baseline input.Baseline selection matters.

Benefits of Feature Attribution

Used carefully, attribution supports practical model quality work.

  • Debug unexpected predictions and data-processing errors.
  • Detect reliance on weak, irrelevant, or sensitive inputs.
  • Give reviewers and users a clearer account of an automated result.
  • Monitor whether important inputs change after data or model updates.

Limits of Feature Attribution

An explanation is useful evidence, not a complete account of machine reasoning.

  • Importance does not establish causation.
  • Correlated inputs may split or distort apparent importance.
  • Different methods and baselines can produce different explanations.
  • A plausible explanation may still fail to reflect what the model truly relies on.

Using Feature Attribution in AI Application Development

Define the decision users need explained before choosing a method. Keep model, data, and explanation versions together, then test whether removing highly ranked inputs changes outputs as expected. Show technical teams detailed diagnostics, while giving end users concise reasons. When building AI-powered products with an AI app builder, teams can plan explanation views alongside model testing and deployment.
