Output Tokens

Output tokens are units of text, code, or data that an AI model generates as its response. They are the pieces a model produces one after another to form a completion, such as a chat reply, code change, or JSON result. Their count affects response length, speed, model limits, and API cost.

What are output tokens?

Output tokens are the units of text, code, or data an AI model generates in its response. They build a completion, such as a chat reply, code change, JSON object, or tool-call arguments. A token is not always a word or character. Depending on the tokenizer, it may be a word fragment, punctuation mark, or short word. Output tokens are also called completion tokens.

How AI models generate output tokens

A language model creates a response by repeatedly predicting the next token from the context it receives.

  1. The model reads the prompt, system instructions, chat history, documents, and tool results.
  2. It predicts the next token based on its settings and instructions.
  3. It adds that token to the response and uses it as context for the next prediction.
  4. It repeats until it reaches a stop instruction, maximum output limit, or natural endpoint.
  5. The application receives the assembled tokens as prose, code, or structured data.

Output tokens vs. input tokens

Input and output tokens use the same tokenization system, but move in different directions during an AI request.

Token typeWhat it representsPractical effect
Input tokensInstructions, user messages, files, chat history, and other context sent to the model. They use context-window capacity before generation begins.
Output tokensThe model's generated text, code, JSON, or tool arguments. They use remaining capacity and usually take longer because they are generated sequentially.

Why output tokens affect cost, speed, and response limits

AI API providers commonly measure input and output tokens separately, with pricing that varies by model and provider. More output tokens usually mean longer responses and more generation time. A model's context window must hold both input and output, while a max-output setting limits what it can return. If the limit is too low, answers can stop mid-sentence, code can be incomplete, or JSON can be invalid. Some reasoning models also use hidden reasoning or thinking tokens; provider reporting and billing can differ, so review the documentation.

Practical ways to control output token use

Good token control preserves useful detail instead of making every answer short.

  • Request a clear length, such as five bullets, a 200-word summary, or one function.
  • Set a suitable maximum token limit and test for truncation.
  • Use structured output when software needs predictable, machine-readable fields.
  • Split large reports, code-generation tasks, or document analyses into smaller stages.
  • Log token usage during testing to find prompts that produce unexpectedly long responses.

Output tokens in AI app development with Emergent

Output-token planning matters when an AI product generates code, user-facing replies, or data another part of an application must process. In Emergent's agentic software-development workflow, teams can plan response length and format while building AI-enabled web and mobile products. This helps agents return complete code changes, useful interface copy, and valid structured results without unnecessarily long generations. Build token-aware AI apps with Emergent.
