Churn Rate

Churn rate is a software product metric that measures the percentage of users, accounts, or recurring revenue lost during a defined period. In subscription apps and SaaS products, it helps teams assess retention, spot cancellation patterns, and distinguish product issues from payment failures.

What Is Churn Rate in Software?

Churn rate is the percentage of users, accounts, or recurring revenue that a software product loses during a defined period. SaaS teams and subscription app teams use it to understand whether customers continue finding value after they sign up.

A churned account must have one consistent definition, such as a cancellation, an expired subscription, or a specified period of confirmed inactivity. Without that rule, changes in reporting can look like changes in retention.

Churn Rate Formula and How to Calculate It

The basic formula measures eligible losses against active accounts at the start of the period.

  1. Choose a reporting window, such as a month or quarter.
  2. Count active accounts at the start of that window.
  3. Count accounts that met your defined churn condition during the window.
  4. Divide lost accounts by starting active accounts.
  5. Multiply the result by 100. If 5 of 100 starting accounts churn, monthly churn is 5%.

Customer Churn vs. Revenue Churn

Account losses and revenue losses answer different questions. Track both when plans have different prices.

MeasureWhat it shows
Customer churnThe share of accounts that leave.
Gross revenue churnRecurring revenue lost through cancellations and downgrades.
Net revenue churnRevenue lost after upgrades or expansions offset losses.
Voluntary churnCustomers actively cancel because they choose to leave.
Involuntary churnSubscriptions end after failed payments, expired cards, or billing issues.

What a High Churn Rate Means

A 10% monthly churn rate means one in ten starting accounts met the churn definition that month. At 20%, losses are faster, but neither figure is meaningful without context. Monthly and annual rates are not directly comparable, and there is no universal good churn rate. Compare results within the same product, customer segment, pricing model, and measurement window.

Benefits of Tracking Churn Rate

Churn becomes useful when teams connect it to product behavior and customer feedback.

  • Find onboarding friction before new users reach activation.
  • Monitor whether a release created reliability or usability problems.
  • Identify segments with weak adoption or poor product fit.
  • Improve payment recovery for failed subscription renewals.
  • Prioritize retention work alongside usage and support data.

Practical Limits and Common Measurement Mistakes

Churn is a signal, not a complete diagnosis.

  • Do not use ending accounts as the denominator.
  • Do not mix individual users, workspaces, and paying accounts.
  • Do not count a reactivated subscriber as a new loss.
  • Do not assume every inactive user has cancelled.
  • Do not ignore downgrades, upgrades, or mismatched cohorts.

Using Churn Signals in an Emergent App

Emergent can help teams build retention workflows that combine subscription events, product usage, and support signals. A Stripe subscription integration can capture payment failures, while a AI dashboard builder can surface at-risk segments. Teams can also create a churn-prevention agent to trigger timely recovery or outreach actions.
