Claude Fable 5.5 Release Date: What's Actually Confirmed

There is no Fable 5.5 release date. As of October 5, 2026, Anthropic has not announced a model called Claude Fable 5.5, and its documentation lists Claude Fable 5.1 as the newest Fable.
That puts Fable 5.5 in a different position from Haiku 5.5, which Anthropic has at least named. Everything circulating about Fable 5.5 comes from social posts, community demos, and third-party trackers.
If you were hoping to time a project around the next Fable, the useful facts are what Anthropic has published about Fable 5.1 and the 5.5 family. They also tell you how a real Fable launch would show up.
Fable 5.5 release date: Anthropic has not announced one
Anthropic has given no Fable 5.5 release date, release window, or model ID. Its newsroom, model directory, and deprecation table contain no entry for the name.
The current Fable is Claude Fable 5.1, released on September 1, 2026, alongside Claude Mythos 5.1. Our Fable 5.1 release date coverage tracked that launch, which Anthropic announced on its own newsroom with a model ID, pricing, and a system card on day one.
None of those artifacts exist for Fable 5.5. A specific date for next week has been circulating on social media, but it traces to no Anthropic document. Until one appears, any date you see is a guess.
Anthropic has not confirmed the name Fable 5.5 either
The name "Fable 5.5" comes from the community, not from Anthropic. When Anthropic opened the Claude 5.5 family on September 22, its Opus 5.5 announcement named only two models to follow: Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. Fable was not on the list.
The same post positioned Opus 5.5 as performing at the level of Fable 5.1 on most work. That framing treats Fable 5.1 as the current benchmark for the top of the lineup, not as a model about to be replaced.
Version numbers on the Fable line have also moved differently from Opus. Fable went from 5 to 5.1, while Opus went from 5 to 5.5. Nothing guarantees the next Fable will carry the 5.5 number, and our Opus 5.5 release date piece shows how Anthropic confirmed that model's name before shipping it.
Worth knowing: Fable 5.1 shipped 84 days after Fable 5. As of today, 34 days have passed since Fable 5.1 launched. That gap is history, not a forecast, and Anthropic has published no Fable roadmap.
Where Fable sits in the current Claude lineup
Fable 5.1 is Anthropic's most capable generally available model, and Opus 5.5 is the model Anthropic now recommends starting with for most workloads. Anthropic's models overview points to Fable 5.1 for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work, or when Opus 5.5 at higher effort still falls short.

The price gap matters more than any rumor. Fable 5.1 costs 2.5 times as much as Opus 5.5 per token, so a future Fable has to earn its premium on the hardest tasks. Our Fable 5.1 vs Opus 5.5 comparison covers where that premium pays off today.
Fable 5.1 did cut one cost sharply. Anthropic's Fable page lists cache reads at $0.25 per million tokens, 75% less than Fable 5, which our Fable 5.1 pricing guide breaks down.
Why "hidden Fable 5.5" claims do not prove a release
Reports that Claude is secretly serving Fable 5.5 under the Fable 5.1 label have not been verified by Anthropic. They rest on screenshots, impressive demos, and recall tests that ask the model about recent events.
On the API, Anthropic's own rules cut against the idea. Its model versioning documentation says each model ID maps to one fixed snapshot. Anthropic does not update the weights behind an existing ID, and updated weights get a new ID.
The same page notes that serving infrastructure around a model can change, which can cause small differences in behavior. That is a more ordinary explanation for "this feels different" posts than an unannounced model swap.
None of this proves Anthropic is not testing something new. It means a demo or screenshot cannot tell you which model produced it, and it cannot give you a release date.
How to tell when a new Fable model actually ships
A real Fable launch will show up in Anthropic's own channels first. These are the signals worth watching:
- A launch post: an Anthropic newsroom announcement naming the model, as happened with Fable 5 and Fable 5.1.
- A new model ID: a new Fable entry in the models overview, separate from claude-fable-5-1.
- A rate card: published input, output, and cache prices on Anthropic's pricing page.
- A system card: Fable 5.1 launched with one, alongside its announcement.
- A retirement row: a new line in the deprecations table with its own "not sooner than" date.
If the next Fable arrives under a different version number, these signals will still catch it. Watch for the documentation, not the name.
Build with Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5 today
There is no Fable 5.5 release date to wait for, and the models that do exist cover the hardest work you are likely to throw at them. Fable 5.1 handles long, multi-step projects, and Opus 5.5 delivers close to Fable-level results at a lower price.
