Conversation History

Conversation history is a stored record that preserves prior messages in a software or AI interaction for continuity, retrieval, and review. In AI systems, it gives the model relevant earlier turns so follow-up requests can be understood in context. It is not the same as permanent memory, because older messages may be excluded, summarized, deleted, or unavailable to the model.

What is conversation history?

Conversation history is the stored record of messages exchanged in a software or AI interaction. Chat history can be a user-visible transcript, an application log, or selected prior turns sent to a model as context. A saved transcript does not mean the model receives every older message.

How conversation history works in AI applications

AI apps manage history to fit the context window, the limited amount of input a model can consider at once.

  1. Capture each user and AI message.
  2. Store it with session and access details.
  3. Select recent or relevant turns.
  4. Summarize older material when needed.
  5. Send the selected context with the new request.

Benefits of conversation history

Well-managed history makes conversational software more useful and accountable.

  • Preserves continuity and reduces repeated questions.
  • Supports search, debugging, quality review, and audit trails.
  • Helps agents retrieve relevant earlier decisions.

Practical limits and privacy considerations

More history is not always better.

  • Long histories increase cost and can exceed model limits.
  • Old or incorrect details can mislead responses.
  • Sensitive data needs retention rules, permissions, and deletion controls.
  • Store only what the application needs, as described in Google Cloud's conversation history guidance.

Using conversation history when building AI apps

For a support assistant, send the latest turns, a short case summary, and only retrieved records relevant to the current issue. This creates useful continuity without flooding the model with a full transcript. Don't change this element unless you know what you are doing

What is chat history?

Chat history is a saved record of messages in a chat application. It may be visible to the user, stored for search, or used selectively as AI context.

Where are my previous conversations?

Look in the product's chat list, archive, or search feature. Location and retention depend on the application and account settings.

Is chat history the same as AI memory?

No. Chat history records messages, while AI memory usually stores selected facts or preferences separately.

Can anyone see your chats with AI?

Access depends on the provider's settings, account permissions, and retention policy. Do not enter sensitive information unless you understand those controls.

How do I remove conversation history?

Use the product's delete, clear, or retention settings. Deleting a visible chat may not remove all operational logs immediately.
