Daily Active Users
What are daily active users?
Daily active users, or DAU, counts unique people who take a defined action in an app, website, or software platform during one day. It measures people, not sessions, page views, clicks, or total actions.
An active user should complete an action that reflects product value, such as creating a project, sending a message, completing a lesson, or viewing a required dashboard. A login alone may be too weak if it does not show product use.
How DAU is calculated
Reliable DAU requires a consistent activity event, identity rule, and reporting window.
- Choose a meaningful event, such as saving a task or publishing content.
- Identify people by account ID where possible, rather than only by browser or device.
- Set the reporting day and time zone.
- Deduplicate new and returning users who performed the event.
- Report the unique-user count. If 120 distinct users create or update a project, DAU is 120.
Authenticated users are easier to deduplicate across devices. Anonymous counts are less precise because cookies can be deleted and people may change devices or use private browsing.
DAU vs. WAU, MAU, and DAU/MAU stickiness
These metrics use different time windows. MAU means monthly active users.
| Metric | What it measures | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| DAU | Unique active users in one day | Products expected to deliver frequent value |
| WAU | Unique active users in one week | Weekly workflows and less frequent use |
| MAU | Unique active users in a month | Overall active audience reach |
| DAU/MAU | DAU divided by MAU | How often monthly users return |
A higher DAU/MAU ratio is not always better. The right target depends on whether the product meets a daily, weekly, or occasional need.
Benefits of tracking daily active users
DAU provides a timely engagement signal when paired with deeper measures.
- Shows whether users return for recurring value.
- Measures the engagement effect of feature releases.
- Flags possible bugs, outages, or onboarding problems.
- Supports segmentation by user type, device, channel, or plan.
- Adds context to retention, conversion, and completion rates.
Limits of DAU as a product metric
DAU can mislead when measurement is weak or daily use is not expected.
- Loose activity definitions can inflate low-value engagement.
- Duplicate identities can count one person twice.
- Campaigns can briefly raise DAU without improving retention.
- Low DAU may suit software used monthly or only when needed.
- Use privacy-aware analytics, collect only needed data, and pair DAU with cohort retention and meaningful-action completion.
How to use DAU to improve a software product
Use DAU to investigate product behavior, not as a standalone score.
- Set a baseline with the same event, identity rule, and time zone.
- Separate new and returning users.
- Compare changes with releases, campaigns, channels, and errors.
- Audit event quality before assuming behavior changed.
- Form one testable hypothesis about friction or value.
- Test one improvement and monitor DAU, retention, and task completion.
