Exponential Backoff

Exponential backoff is a retry strategy that increases the wait time after each failed software request. It gives an overloaded service or interrupted network time to recover before the next attempt. Reliable implementations cap delays, limit attempts, add jitter, and retry only errors likely to be temporary.

What Is Exponential Backoff?

Exponential backoff is a retry strategy that increases the wait time after each failed software request. It gives a temporarily unavailable API, server, or network time to recover, rather than worsening overload with immediate retries.

How the Exponential Backoff Algorithm Works

Each failure increases the next delay by a multiplier.

  1. Start with a base delay, such as one second.
  2. Calculate delay as base delay × factor raised to the attempt number.
  3. With a factor of two, waits become 1, 2, 4, then 8 seconds.
  4. Stop at a maximum delay, attempt count, or total time budget.

Exponential Backoff With Jitter

Jitter adds controlled randomness to a delay. Without it, many clients can retry together after an outage and create a retry storm. Full or equal jitter spreads requests across time, a practice described in the AWS guidance on backoff and jitter.

Exponential vs Linear vs Binary Exponential Backoff

These approaches suit different engineering problems.

MethodDelay growthUse and caution
ExponentialMultipliesAPI retries, cap it
LinearAdds fixed timePredictable, slower relief
Binary exponentialRandomized slotsNetwork collisions, not default API retries

Benefits of Retry Backoff

Used carefully, retry backoff improves resilience.

  • Protects struggling services and rate-limited APIs.
  • Allows recovery from temporary server and network errors.
  • Reduces contention in distributed systems.

Practical Limits and Safety Rules

Retries must be selective and observable.

  • Do not retry validation, authentication, or permission errors.
  • Honor a server's Retry-After instruction.
  • Use idempotency keys for retryable write requests.
  • Log attempts, cap delays, and stop at user-facing deadlines.

Using Exponential Backoff in App Development

Don't change this element unless you know what you are doing

What is retry with exponential backoff?

It is a policy that retries a temporary failed operation after progressively longer waits. It should include attempt limits, delay caps, and rules for errors that are safe to retry.

What is exponential backoff with jitter?

It adds a random value to each calculated delay. Jitter prevents many clients from retrying at the same moment after a shared failure.

How do you implement exponential backoff for 429 errors?

First honor the Retry-After response header when present. Otherwise, retry with capped exponential delays and jitter, stop after a defined time budget, and avoid sending duplicate write operations.

What errors should not be retried with exponential backoff?

Do not automatically retry permanent client errors, such as invalid input, failed authentication, insufficient permissions, or requests that would create duplicate side effects without idempotency protection.
