Faithfulness Metric

A faithfulness metric is an AI evaluation metric that checks whether a generated answer is supported by the retrieved documents or other supplied context. It helps teams detect unsupported claims, contradictions, and hallucinations in retrieval-augmented generation systems. A high score shows grounding in the available context, not necessarily that the context itself is correct or complete.

What Is a Faithfulness Metric?

A faithfulness metric checks whether an AI-generated answer is supported by retrieved documents or supplied context. In retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, it identifies unsupported claims, contradictions, and hallucinations. A high score means the answer stayed grounded in the sources. It does not prove those sources are accurate, complete, or current.

Faithfulness is often evaluated by an LLM acting as a judge, as described in Ragas documentation. It asks whether each factual statement can be traced to the provided context.

How the Faithfulness Metric Works

The evaluation compares an answer with the information available to the model.

  1. Provide the user query, retrieved passages, and generated answer.
  2. Split the answer into checkable factual claims.
  3. Assess whether each claim is supported, contradicted, or unsupported by the context.
  4. Calculate a score, commonly supported claims divided by total checkable claims.
  5. Review failed claims to identify retrieval, source, prompt, or generation problems.

Faithfulness vs. Correctness, Relevance, and Retrieval Quality

These measures answer different questions and work best together.

MetricWhat it checks
FaithfulnessWhether answer claims are supported by supplied context.
CorrectnessWhether the answer is true in the real world or against a trusted reference.
Answer relevanceWhether the response addresses the user’s question.
Retrieval qualityWhether the system found complete and useful source passages.

An answer can be faithful but wrong if retrieved documentation is outdated or incomplete.

Benefits of Measuring Faithfulness

Faithfulness helps teams test and improve source-grounded AI.

  • Detects hallucinated details before they reach users.
  • Helps isolate retrieval versus generation failures.
  • Supports safer AI features based on internal documentation.
  • Catches regressions after model, prompt, or knowledge-base changes.
  • Creates clearer audit trails when responses include citations.

Limits of Faithfulness Scores

A score is evidence, not a final verdict.

  • Results depend on claim extraction and the judge model.
  • Subtle implications or misleading wording can be difficult to detect.
  • The metric does not verify whether source documents are true.
  • Cautious answers may score well while offering little help.
  • High-risk outputs still need targeted human review.

How to Use Faithfulness Metrics in LLM Evaluation

Use repeatable tests rather than treating one score as proof of quality.

  • Create representative test cases, including ambiguous and difficult questions.
  • Store retrieved passages beside every evaluated output.
  • Set thresholds that match feature and user risk.
  • Review claim-level failures, not only the aggregate score.
  • Pair faithfulness with relevance, correctness, and retrieval metrics.
  • Monitor production samples for drift.
