Monthly Active Users

Monthly active users is a software product metric that counts unique users who complete a defined activity within a 30-day period. Also called MAU, it shows the size of a product's recently engaged audience, but its meaning depends on how the team defines an active user and identifies unique people.

What Are Monthly Active Users?

Monthly active users, or MAU, counts unique users who complete a defined activity within 30 days. It measures the recently engaged audience for a website, app, SaaS product, or online platform. Each person counts once, regardless of how often they return.

How Monthly Active Users Are Calculated

MAU is not a visit count. It requires a documented activity rule and a consistent user identifier.

  1. Define a qualifying action that represents real product use.
  2. Choose a calendar month or rolling 30-day window.
  3. Connect events to a stable user ID, not sessions or devices.
  4. Exclude internal testers, bots, and known invalid traffic.
  5. Count the remaining unique user IDs. Formula: MAU = unique eligible users with a qualifying event in the window.

For example, a project-management app may count users who create, edit, or complete a task. A user completing 12 tasks adds one MAU.

What Counts as an Active User?

The activity definition should reflect the value your software delivers, not the easiest event to collect.

Signal typeExampleWhy it matters
Weak signalOpening an app or logging inMay reflect curiosity, notifications, or accidental use.
Meaningful actionPublishing content, sending a message, or completing a workflowShows the user received or created core product value.

MAU vs. DAU vs. WAU

These metrics count unique active users over different periods and add context to MAU.

MetricWindowUseful for
DAUOne dayProducts built around daily habits, such as messaging apps.
WAUSeven daysTools used once or several times per week.
MAU30 daysBroad recent reach and adoption.

DAU divided by MAU can indicate engagement frequency, but expectations vary by product.

Benefits of Tracking Monthly Active Users

MAU provides a consistent high-level view of recent software usage.

  • Monitors audience reach and adoption over time.
  • Highlights changes after releases, campaigns, or onboarding updates.
  • Creates a shared product-health measure across teams.

Limitations of MAU and Common Measurement Errors

MAU is useful only when its definition and data quality are clear.

  • Different activity rules make comparisons unreliable.
  • Anonymous and logged-in activity can create duplicate or missing users.
  • Bots, shared accounts, and multiple devices can distort counts.
  • MAU alone does not prove retention, satisfaction, or revenue.

How to Use MAU for Better Product Decisions

Compare MAU with equivalent prior periods and segment it by platform, acquisition channel, and user cohort. Pair it with activation and retention measures to see whether people reach value and return. Investigate material changes, and document the event definition so reports remain comparable after product or tracking changes.

Tracking MAU in Apps Built With Emergent

When building with an AI app builder, define meaningful activation events early, use authentication to identify users consistently, and plan analytics for product decisions. Emergent can help teams build full-stack apps, while an AI dashboard builder can support reporting. Review how to get your first users and practical app design and development guidance before interpreting MAU trends.
