Weaviate
What Is Weaviate?
Weaviate is a vector database that stores data and embeddings so software can find related content by meaning, not only exact words. An embedding is a numeric representation of text, images, or other data that helps a computer compare similarity. Weaviate stores these vectors alongside the original object and metadata, such as document type, date, or access level. This makes it useful for AI search, recommendations, and retrieval-augmented generation, also called RAG.
How Weaviate Vector Search Works
Weaviate turns source content into searchable representations and returns the most relevant records for a query.
- Define a collection, including the fields and metadata the application needs.
- Import records such as help articles, product listings, or knowledge-base pages.
- Generate embeddings with a selected model, or provide embeddings created elsewhere.
- Index the vectors so similar records can be found efficiently.
- Submit a natural-language query, optionally with metadata filters.
- Retrieve the closest matching records and their supporting details.
- Pass approved results to a language model when building a RAG response.
Semantic Search, Keyword Search, and Hybrid Search
Different search methods solve different retrieval problems. Hybrid search is often the safer default when users may search for both concepts and exact terms.
| Method | Best for | Common weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Semantic or vector search | Finding similar meaning despite different wording | Can miss exact codes or uncommon names |
| Keyword search, such as BM25 | Product IDs, names, and exact phrases | Does not understand synonyms well |
| Hybrid search | Mixed queries that need meaning and exact matching | Requires tuning the balance between signals |
Why Use Weaviate?
Weaviate gives developers a focused retrieval layer for AI applications.
- It supports meaning-based search with filters for fields such as category, language, or date.
- It can support multimodal data when the chosen embedding model and configuration allow it.
- It integrates with model providers for embedding generation and generative workflows.
- It offers open-source, self-hosted deployment and managed cloud options.
- It helps applications retrieve relevant context before an AI model writes an answer.
Practical Limits and Production Considerations
A vector database improves retrieval, but it does not automatically make an AI feature reliable or secure.
- Search relevance depends heavily on embedding quality, content chunking, and metadata design.
- Indexes and infrastructure need careful sizing and tuning as data volume and query traffic grow.
- Applications must enforce user permissions before retrieved content is shown or sent to a model.
- Generated answers can still be wrong, so important outputs need validation and clear source handling.
Where Weaviate Fits in an AI Application
A support assistant, for example, can search approved documentation in Weaviate before drafting an answer. The retrieved passages ground the response in current product information. A conventional relational database still handles transactions and source-of-truth records, while Weaviate handles similarity retrieval.
