Corrective RAG
What Is Corrective RAG?
Corrective RAG is a retrieval-augmented generation approach that checks, filters, and repairs weak source context before an AI answers. It extends standard RAG by adding a decision layer that decides whether retrieved documents are good enough to use, need refinement, or should be replaced with better evidence. It corrects the context supplied to a model, not merely the wording of its final answer. The original CRAG research describes this as retrieval evaluation plus knowledge refinement.
How Corrective RAG Works
The workflow evaluates evidence before generation. External search can be a fallback, but it is not required.
- Retrieve candidate document chunks from an approved knowledge source.
- Assess each chunk for relevance, quality, freshness, and permission to use it.
- Route strong evidence to generation, mixed evidence to refinement, and poor evidence to a new search or an abstention path.
- Remove irrelevant passages and retain the facts that directly support the question.
- Generate an answer with source references when the product supports citations.
- Log the route, sources, and outcome for review and testing.
Corrective RAG vs. Standard RAG
Both approaches ground an LLM in retrieved information. Corrective RAG adds explicit quality control between retrieval and response generation.
| Area | Standard RAG | Corrective RAG |
|---|---|---|
| Context handling | Uses top results directly | Evaluates and refines results |
| Routing | Usually one fixed path | Can retry, refine, or abstain |
| Cost and latency | Usually lower | Often higher due to extra checks |
| Best fit | Stable, well-curated knowledge bases | High-risk or uneven source collections |
Benefits of Corrective RAG
Its value comes from treating retrieval quality as a separate engineering problem.
- Reduces reliance on irrelevant or noisy context.
- Provides a safer path for questions that available sources cannot answer.
- Creates source-level records that help teams audit responses.
- Shows whether retrieval, rather than the model, needs improvement.
Practical Limits of Corrective RAG
Corrective RAG improves controls, but it does not guarantee factual answers.
- An evaluator can incorrectly reject useful evidence or approve weak evidence.
- Extra model calls can increase response time and operating cost.
- Outdated source collections still produce outdated answers.
- Web fallback needs domain controls, permission checks, and prompt-injection defenses.
How to Implement and Evaluate Corrective RAG
Start by defining which questions the system may answer and when it must say it lacks evidence. Measure retrieval relevance separately from answer faithfulness. Set conservative routing thresholds, preserve source metadata, test misleading documents and unanswered questions, and monitor retry and fallback rates. These practices fit naturally into app design and development for AI-enabled products.
