Top-p Sampling
What Is Top-p Sampling?
Top-p sampling is an AI decoding method that chooses the next token from a flexible set of likely options. Also called nucleus sampling, it keeps the smallest group of tokens whose combined probability reaches a chosen threshold, then randomly selects one.
A token is a small unit of text, such as a word, part of a word, punctuation mark, or code symbol. Language models assign probabilities to possible next tokens, and top-p filters those predictions to control output variety.
How Top-p Sampling Works
The candidate pool changes with the model's confidence at each generation step.
- The model assigns a probability to each possible next token.
- It ranks tokens from most to least likely.
- It keeps the smallest set meeting the top-p value.
- It rescales retained probabilities to total 1.
- It randomly selects one retained token.
With top-p set to 0.90, probabilities of 0.60, 0.20, and 0.15 require three candidates. At another step, probabilities of 0.92 and 0.04 require only the first. This differs from a fixed cutoff.
Top-p vs. Top-k Sampling and Temperature
These controls affect generation differently and can be combined, though changing several at once makes results harder to diagnose.
| Control | What it changes | Adaptive pool? | Useful for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top-p | Cumulative probability cutoff | Yes | Natural variation |
| Top-k | Fixed number of candidates | No | Strict candidate limits |
| Temperature | Relative probability spread | No | More or less randomness |
| Greedy decoding | Always selects the likeliest token | No | Repeatable baseline output |
| Deterministic generation | Fixed settings and random seed where supported | No | Testing and debugging |
Benefits of Top-p Sampling
Top-p balances rigid output and unrestricted randomness.
- It adapts the candidate set to model confidence.
- It can create natural variation when several continuations fit.
- It excludes very unlikely tokens.
- It can help with creative copy, chat, code suggestions, and varied test data.
Limits and Practical Risks
Top-p changes selection, not model knowledge or reliability.
- It does not prevent hallucinations, bias, unsafe content, repetition, syntax errors, or incorrect code.
- Higher values can make outputs less predictable across runs.
- Random seeds and provider defaults can affect reproducibility.
- Software workflows still need validation, tests, guardrails, and structured-output constraints.
Choosing a Top-p Value for AI Applications
Start with your platform's default, test representative prompts, and change one decoding control at a time. Lower values often suit constrained tasks, such as field extraction or configuration files. Higher values may suit ideation and alternative phrasing. Record the model, prompt, top-p value, temperature, seed, and output for fair comparisons.
