Chunk Overlap

Chunk overlap is a text-chunking setting that repeats a small portion of one segment at the start of the next. In retrieval-augmented generation systems, it helps ensure that an idea split at a chunk boundary remains available in a complete, searchable passage. The right amount depends on document structure, chunk size, retrieval behavior, and the cost of storing duplicate text.

What Is Chunk Overlap?

Chunk overlap is a text-chunking setting that repeats part of one segment at the start of the next. In AI retrieval systems, it preserves meaning when a sentence, rule, or instruction crosses a chunk boundary.

A chunk is a smaller piece of a document prepared for processing. In retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, chunks become embeddings, are stored in a vector search index, and are retrieved for related questions. Overlap gives adjacent chunks shared context.

How Chunk Overlap Works in RAG

Overlap is applied before document text is indexed.

  1. Split a source document into chunks.
  2. Copy the end of one chunk to the start of the next.
  3. Create embeddings and store them with useful metadata.
  4. Retrieve relevant chunks and provide them to the model.

For example, overlap can keep a refund rule searchable when the sentence about required approval crosses a split. In tools such as LangChain, chunk overlap is commonly a text-splitter parameter.

Chunk Size vs. Chunk Overlap

These settings solve related but different problems.

SettingControlsRisk if poorly set
Chunk sizeHow much text each searchable passage containsToo small loses context; too large dilutes topic focus
Chunk overlapHow much boundary text adjacent passages shareToo little misses connections; too much duplicates noise

Overlap cannot fix missing metadata, incorrect splits inside tables or code blocks, or unclear document structure.

Benefits of Chunk Overlap

It is useful for long clauses, linked steps, and detailed instructions.

  • Preserves context at split points.
  • Improves retrieval of ideas spanning adjacent passages.
  • Supports coherent answers when qualifiers are included.
  • Makes fixed-length splitting more resilient when clean boundaries are unavailable.

Practical Limits of Chunk Overlap

More overlap is not automatically better.

  • Duplicate text adds embedding, indexing, and storage work.
  • Similar chunks can crowd results with near-duplicates.
  • Large repeated sections reduce topic focus.
  • Excessive overlap can hide a weak chunking strategy.

How to Choose Chunk Size and Overlap

Use retrieval quality, not a universal number.

  1. Split on meaningful boundaries, such as headings, paragraphs, or sentences.
  2. Choose chunk size for the source format and user questions.
  3. Add modest overlap where a boundary may divide an important idea.
  4. Test representative questions, inspect results for missing context or duplicates, and adjust one setting at a time.

When Semantic Chunking Is Better Than More Overlap

Boundary-aware splitting can deliver cleaner retrieval than repeating more text.

ApproachBest fitKey consideration
Fixed-length with overlapPlain, unstructured textUseful fallback when boundaries are inconsistent
Sentence or paragraph-awareArticles and documentationPreserves readable units before overlap is needed
Semantic chunkingStructured knowledge, code, tables, and recordsRespects headings and logical topic changes
