Alpha-Beta Pruning
What Is Alpha-Beta Pruning?
Alpha-beta pruning skips game-tree branches that cannot change a minimax decision. It lets game AI choose the same best move as full minimax while evaluating fewer moves.
In adversarial search, MAX maximizes a score and MIN minimizes it. Alpha-beta tracks what each side can guarantee and stops exploring paths an opponent would not allow to affect the outcome.
How Alpha-Beta Pruning Works
The algorithm passes two score boundaries through a recursive search.
- Start with alpha at negative infinity and beta at positive infinity.
- At a MAX node, update alpha when a higher score is found.
- At a MIN node, update beta when a lower score is found.
- Stop searching remaining children when alpha is greater than or equal to beta.
- Return the best score to the parent node until a move is selected.
A Small Minimax Example
Suppose MAX already has a move worth 6. In a new MIN branch, MIN finds a reply worth 4. MIN can force MAX to 4, so MAX prefers 6 and the algorithm can skip the remaining replies. Skipped moves are not necessarily poor. They cannot affect the current choice.
Minimax vs. Alpha-Beta Pruning
Alpha-beta pruning changes the work performed, not the decision rule.
| Aspect | Minimax | Alpha-beta pruning |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Find the best adversarial move | Find the same move faster |
| Nodes searched | All reachable nodes to the depth limit | Skips irrelevant branches |
| Result quality | Depends on evaluation function | Identical at the same depth |
| Move ordering | Not essential | Strongly affects savings |
Benefits of Alpha-Beta Pruning
It is useful in chess, board-game engines, and turn-based game AI.
- Reduces unnecessary computation.
- Allows deeper look-ahead within a fixed time budget.
- Preserves the minimax result at the selected depth.
- Makes real-time decisions more practical.
Practical Limits of Alpha-Beta Pruning
Pruning does not solve every game AI problem.
- Poor move ordering can greatly reduce cutoffs.
- Game trees still grow exponentially as depth increases.
- Depth and time limits can miss important future positions.
- A weak evaluation function still produces weak decisions.
Implementation Tips for Game AI
Correctness should come before optimization.
- Search likely strong moves first for earlier cutoffs.
- Use iterative deepening so the AI always has a completed move.
- Set a depth or time limit for responsive gameplay.
- Compare results with unpruned minimax on small test trees.
- Log cutoffs to catch incorrect alpha or beta updates.
